How Much Food Are We Really Throwing Away?

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted or lost every year around the world. That is about a third of the food produced for human consumption. Food waste is a global problem, and something needs to be done about it.      

There are many causes of food waste. When grocery shopping, people often buy more food than they really need. This leads to cooking too much food and throwing it out when people don’t finish it. Leftovers get stored in the fridge for too long, leading to throwing out more food.  

Most of those problems only occur in developed countries, such as the U.S. and Canada. In countries that aren’t as developed as others, food is isn’t wasted as much as it is lost. This is due to many reasons. Countries in Southeast Asia lose half of the cauliflower they grow because there isn’t enough proper refrigeration. 34 percent of their food grown is lost because of post-harvest complications. Small amounts of food get purposely thrown out in poor countries because it’s too precious.

People around the world can significantly cut the amount of food wasted by simply being aware of how much food they waste. The UN Environment Program, Food and Agriculture Organization, and other partners came up with a global campaign called Think. Eat. Save. Reduce Your Foodprint 

Think. Eat. Save. is a campaign created to share information to people about food waste. It also encourages people to help reduce the amount of food the world wastes. The campaign specifically targets the food wasted by consumers, food retailers, and the hospitality industry.    

The Think. Eat. Save. Reduce Your Foodprint campaign can change wasteful habits. If people really commit themselves to reducing the amount of food they buy and how much they throw away; food waste could drop significantly.
