On Saturday, January 26th, the Cardinal Players took home over fifteen awards and honors from many different events during the West Virginia Region IV Thespian Festival at Musselman High School.

These events included costume construction, costume design, hand props, makeup design, masks, publicity, set design, and stage props. They also competed in the one act competition with the play The Women of Lockerbie.

Not only is The Women of Lockerbie eligible to perform in the state competition at West Virginia University this year, but it also won Outstanding Actor and Outstanding Supporting Actress: junior Nigel Guest-Hatcher and junior Monica Power, respectively.

“The whole day was surreal,” said Guest-Hatcher. “I was not expecting so much support from everyone, and I definitely wasn’t expecting to win Outstanding Actor. It was just such a fun and amazing experience overall.”

The players’ awards included Power’s 1st place in advanced publicity, seniors Julia Paige Fields and Charity Turley’s 1st place in character makeup design, and Senior Elleanna Stoner’s 1st place for stage managing. Students who placed in any category at the regional competition are eligible to go to the next level with their projects.

The players are ecstatic for their awards and for their one act to be advancing to the state competition. The last time that this was achieved by Spring Mills High School was in the 2016-17 school year, with the show Much Ado About Notinga shortened version of the Shakespearean play, Much Ado About Nothing.

“It’s so cool that our show gets to go to states my senior year,” said Fields. “This is such an amazing show, and we, the actors, have learned a lot from it. I hope that others do too. States is such an amazing experience, and I couldn’t be happier about being able to compete at that level.”
