On February 6th, SMHS students had the opportunity to take the military ASVAB test. The test was open for all 10th-12th graders.

The ASVAB is a nine-section test that determines if someone is eligible to join the branch of military they would like, and it also tells them what jobs they can do when they are in the military. So, it is very important for students to get the best score they can possibly get because it will determine their military career.

The test isn’t just for people who want to join the military. Anybody can take it, and it can help them get a general idea of what they want to do for a career. It will give them a information on what topics they are good at.

The test has nine sections: word knowledge, arithmetic reasoning, mathematics knowledge, general science, paragraph comprehension, electronics information, auto information, shop information, mechanical comprehension, and assembling parts.

Senior Ryan Hammond has taken the ASVAB two times so far, increasing his score on each try.

“I think the ASVAB is great because it gives you an understanding of your strengths and weaknesses. It tells you what you might need to work on to get in the career field of your choice,” said Hammond.

Others used the test to see, if they were to join the military, what jobs they would be eligible for. Senior Brandon Swick also took the test.

“I’m trying to decide what I want to do after high school, and I’ve been thinking about joining the military. Afterwards, they will pay for any schooling I do after I get out, said Swick.

The test is free if students take it at the high school or if they go to their local military recruiter.
