On Thursday May 2, the SMHS thespians hosted a dress rehearsal for the spring musical AnnieThe musical was performed May 3 through May 5.

Dress rehearsal involves rehearsing the entire show with all of the scenes one after another. It also includes the elements of tech, hair and makeup, and the costumes.

In the end, dress rehearsals consist of a final run through of the show, in which it is rehearsed the way it would be performed to an audience.

“It’s bittersweet. We are a family in the theatre department. It’s hard and sad to be leaving but I know my future outside of high school is bright,” said senior Kendall Synder, who played Annie.

Synder has been involved in theatre since 2012, and she got her start at The Apollo Civic Theatre.

She has been a part of three productions here at SMHS, which include Bye Bye BirdieThe Cover of Life, and Annie.

“When I was eleven, I was in a production of Annie, and I played a nun, but now I’m seventeen and I got to play an eleven-year-old, so I guess the sun really does come out tomorrow,” said Synder.

The cost of the production for Annie was about $8,000. This includes props, music, tech, costumes, and more.

The art departments were also involved in Annie just as much as the theatre department was.

Students from art classes helped design the set by painting, and the music department made it possible for Annie to have a live orchestra play during the show.

Since the spring production of Annie was a musical, students who are in choir also had a part in the ensemble, singing and dancing in the background.

All the departments worked together to make this production of Annie possible. Next time there’s a show, don’t forget all the work that goes on behind the scenes.
