COVID-19 is a disease caused by coronaviruses. Coronaviruses are a big cluster of viruses which can cause illness in humans or animals. COVID-19 stands for Coronavirus Disease 2019. This disease started in December 2019 and has become a bigger deal and a wider spread each day. This disease can spread from person to person through small droplets from the result of coughing or sneezing. The media tends to blow cases like these to grab the attention of viewers.

COVID-19 started first in Wuhan, China. They had a link to a large seafood and large live animal market. This can explain that it may have started from animal to person. But it did not come out to be true that this disease came from the animals because not all citizens took a trip to this specific market. This explains that it also spread from person to person.

Wet market located in China

Disease in the United States spread and started by one person. This person took an international trip to one of the infected areas and came back with the disease. Some cases like these can’t be traced back to the risk factors, meaning a specific part of China could not be determined. This is concerning to the public because of people who decided to go on cruises around to different areas of the world and having people be oblivious to the disease.

Symptoms include fever, tiredness, and dry cough. Some people may experience aches and pains, nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat, and diarrhea. Symptoms are mild but start gradually. Older people are more at risk to this disease. A person with underlying health problems are also at risk. A healthy 20 year old should not be concerned on getting compared to a sickly 50 year old.  Symptoms are being taken out of proportion on how it affects people.  About 80% of people recover from the disease without needing special treatment. Stay about 3 feet away from a person who is showing symptoms or is sick.

Antibiotics do not work against COVID-19. Antibiotics are used to treat bacterial infections. In this case, COVID-19 is caused by a virus, so they don’t work. Antibiotics should not be used as a way of prevention or treatment. That’s why when you get the flu, they don’t really give you medicine.

Medical masks are mostly sold out and are in high demand

The media tends to make COVID-19 sound like a terrible disease like Ebola. However, It is the flu but a little worse. Some things you can do to keep yourself healthy is to wash your hands well for at least 20 seconds, stay home when you’re sick, and cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. Make sure to wash your hands after coughing or sneezing. Hand sanitizer works for 30 seconds but then as soon as you touch something, it stops working. Don’t wear a mask if you’re not infected. When you put the mask on, you are breathing the same air constantly because it is right by your nose. The air and germs will cling on to the mask and you will be continually breathing in those germs, which can result in getting sick.
