Does Living a Minimalistic Lifestyle Make for a Happy Life?

Minimalism is a trend in sculpture and painting that arose in the 1950s and used simple, typically massive, forms. One key word in this definition is “simple”. In our lives, minimalism is a tool to rid yourself of life’s clutter in favor of focusing on what’s important. This is so you can find happiness, fulfillment, and euphoria in your lifestyle and soul. Now, minimalism isn’t just about physical possessions and physical mess. It’s also about opening your schedule, making a to-do list, focusing on your priorities, and being clear about who you are and what you want out of life. How do we incorporate these ideas of minimalism into our lifestyles and headspaces?  

Creating a to-do list is one of the most common things we do to remind ourselves what to get done. We end up putting too many tasks on there and never get them done. According to PCA, “To really minimalize your to-do list, you need to clearly identify what your goals are. This allows you to cut tasks that are irrelevant.” You must be able to cut yourself off and be aware of what you can do in the time that you have. Telling yourself “No” is a valuable skill to carry out when trying to live a minimalistic life.  

Schedules tend to get overcrowded with what they want to be done during the day. People tend to cram everything into a specific time frame. Flexibility is key to living a minimalistic life. According to Minimalism Made Simple, “Balance, as with everything in life, creates happiness.” Balancing a healthy schedule can reduce stress. Putting flexibility into your schedule is key for innovation and creativity. Flexibility also reduces stress and leaves time for you to think to yourself and just relax.  

Physical clutter is the equivalent of stress as mind clutter. How do we declutter our mind? If we focus more on quality time and relationships, it can cause happiness derived from love over materialistic possessions. Spend time with someone and talk to them about what’s going on in your mind. Decluttering your mind can lead to motivation and happiness. A person can feel freer after letting these negative thoughts out.  

In my opinion, I do think that living a more minimalistic life will lead to a happier life. These ways of changing your lifestyle can really make a difference. I think that if we focus on these ways of life, we can genuinely get things done and live a more peaceful lifestyle. I believe that if a person declutters their life, it can help declutter their mind. Minimalism and happiness come together in symbiosis. They thrive and grow with each other. When you want something new, ask yourself this question:
