Support for the Sleepy Creek Fire

Ash Butts, Author

Around 3 pm on Monday, March 21st, a fire was reported in the Sleepy Creek Mountains, Morgan County. It is currently unsure what started the fire. At the moment, firefighters from four states have come to help. Units from West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia were all called to help the fire.

As of Tuesday morning, nobody has been reported injured, but the Wildlife Management has closed off the area to anyone except firefighters and authorized personnel. It has estimated that the fire has spread somewhere between 50 to 100 acres. As of right now, Sleepy Creek residents are not in danger but warned of heavy smoke conditions.

Our school is currently accepting donations for the firefighters. Water, Gatorade, and snacks would all be greatly appreciated. Any donations should be taken to Mrs. Roach’s room in the science hallway.
