SMHS Boys varsity soccer took down the Greenbrier Spartans at home on Saturday, September 22nd.

Sophomore Dominic Weber scored his second goal of the season to take the lead for the Cardinals. Five minutes after the second half started, junior Christian Romero extended the lead to 2-0 for the Cardinals. The boys soccer team had possession of the ball the majority of the game.

“I felt great because all of the hard work our team had done in practice payed off,” said Weber. He came off the bench looking forward to scoring a goal. The coaching staff knew what the team’s problem was and made changes to break down the Spartans’ defense.

“We recognized that they wanted to keep possession, so we pressured them and stayed patient,” said Weber. Sophomore Mason Marnell, who helped the team offensively and defensively, had a couple shots on goal. The team’s defense stopped all the attacking possessions of the Spartans.

Junior Kevin Whitener had amazing saves during the games. As a goalkeeper for the Cardinals, this is his second clean sheet for this season. He has been incredible this year.

“I am looking forward to going to the playoffs and winning all the games this time,” said Whitener. The boys soccer team is on a mission to win the rest of the games for their season and win sectionals.

The coach staff is very positive and believes that they can win sectionals. Coach Kidwell has been a big impact to keep the team solid. This is his first year coaching the team and hopefully he will make the team better for the upcoming years.
